Introduction | Valorant Ascent Map Guide
Ascent is the “Dust 2” of Valorant. It has been in the pool since launch and has barely changed.
Why? Because it is perfect.
It is a map defined by a massive Open Mid and paper-thin walls.
If you like Sova, Fade, or Odin, this is your home.

The Golden Rule: Mid Control
Ascent is unique because both bombsites have gates that can be closed. Once the gates are down, retaking is a nightmare.
Therefore, the team that controls Mid controls the round.
Attackers:
- The Split: You almost rarely want to 5-man rush A Main or B Main. It is too easy to trap you.
- The Strategy: Send 2 players Mid. Smoke “Market” and “Pizza” (CT).
- If you take Mid, you can walk into Tree (to hit A) or Market (to hit B). This forces defenders to split their attention.
Defenders:
- You cannot give up Mid for free.
- The Setup: One player pivots A Short (Catwalk). One player holds Market.
- If you lose Mid, you are trapped in site. You have to fight your way out just to rotate.
Site A Strategy (Attack & Defense)
Attack (The Generator Plant)
- Smokes: Smoke Heaven and Door (Tree).
- The Path: Flash A Main. Clear “Wine” (the deep cubby).
- The Plant: The standard plant is in front of the Green Box (Generator). Why? Because it can be defended from Main, Tree, and Heaven.
- The Ult: Killjoy Lockdown in A Main clears the entire site except Hell.
Defense (The Crossfire)
- One Player Generator: Can peek Main.
- One Player Tree: Can close door if they rush.
- One Player Heaven: The Operator angle.
- Tip: Do not play “Hell” (Under Heaven) unless you have a way out (Jett Dash/Omen TP). You will get molly’d and die.
The “One-Way” Smoke
Omen players should place a smoke on the archway of A Main. This creates a “One-Way” where you can see the attackers’ feet, but they cannot see you. It is a free kill.
Site B Strategy (The Odin Lane)
B Site is famous for one thing: B Main Wallbangs.
Defense (The Paper Wall)
- Agent: Sova or Odin user.
- Spot: Stand in “Lane” or Backsite.
- Action: When the round starts, shoot a Recon Bolt into B Main.
- The Cheesy Strat: If it scans anyone, Spam the wall. The wall between Lane and B Main is made of paper. An Odin shreds through it. You can get 2-3 kills before they even enter the site.
Attack (The Rush)
- B is hard to slow-take. You usually want to explode out.
- Smokes: Smoke Market and CT Spawn.
- Utility: Flash out. Clear “Boat House” (Backsite) immediately.
- Post-Plant: Once the spike is down, fall back to B Main. It is very hard for defenders to defuse if you are spamming them from B Main.
Best Agents for Ascent
S-Tier Picks
- Sova (Initiator): Essential. His Recon Bolt and Drone provide too much value on the open sites. His Hunter’s Fury (Ult) covers the entire B Lane.
- Killjoy (Sentinel): Her turntable setup on B Site and Alarmbot in A Tree is the standard meta.
- Jett (Duelist): The best Operator agent for holding Mid or Heaven.
- Omen/Astra (Controller): Omen is great for “One-Ways” on A Main.
F-Tier Picks
- Brimstone: His smoke range is too short for the massive Mid area.
- Neon: Too much open space; she gets OP’d easily.
The “Paper Walls” (Wallbang Spots)
Ascent has “High Penetration” walls everywhere.
- B Main: The entire wall separating Main and Site.
- A Heaven: The glass window is breakable, but the wall beside it is bangable with an Odin.
- Mid Switch: You can shoot through the switch console from Mid to hit Market.
- Engine/Generator: The Green Boxes are bangable with High Penetration weapons (Sheriff/Odin/Operator).
Retake Protocols
Retaking Ascent is notoriously difficult because of the chokepoints.
Retaking A Site
- Don’t go Heaven alone. It is the first angle attackers hold.
- The Tree Pinch: You must have teammates push through Tree (Door) while you push Heaven. Opening the door breaks the attackers’ crosshair placement.
- Flash Generator: Before peeking, throw a flash over the generator to blind the planter.
Retaking B Site
- Wallbang Back: Attackers will be spamming you from B Main. You need to spam them back.
- Utility Clearing: Use Sova shock darts or Kayo Mollies to clear “Boat House” (Backsite). That is where the annoying “rat” always hides.
Lurking Timings
If you are the Lurker (e.g., Cypher or Viper), your job is to catch rotations.
- The Mid Lurk: Wait for the enemy team to rotate through CT spawn. Walk up Mid Market and shoot them in the back.
- The B Main Lurk: If your team is hitting A, wait in B Main. The B defender will likely push out to flank. Catch them.
- Trigger Discipline: If you see one enemy rotating, wait. There is usually a second one behind him. Kill the second one first, then the first one.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Should I close the doors on Ascent?
A: Defenders: Only close it if they are actively rushing. If you close it early, you deny your own team rotation info.
Attackers: Break it immediately. Do not let them feel safe.
Q: Is Odin Troll on Ascent?
A: No. It is Meta. Sova + Odin on B Site is a legitimate strategy seen in VCT. It punishes 5-man rushes.
Q: Where is the best place to Op?
A: A Heaven or Mid Bottom. Both offer long sightlines where you can escape easily.
Q: How do I stop a rush B?
A: Utility dumping. As soon as you hear footsteps, throw your Killjoy molly, Sage slow, or smoke. Delay them for 10 seconds. That gives your team enough time to rotate.
